Women's Health Compounding Pharmacy for Hormone and Vaginal Support
Some women’s health needs don’t fit what a commercial pharmacy stocks. Estradiol doses that fall between what’s commercially available. Progesterone in a form a patient can actually tolerate. Vaginal support formulations that combine multiple ingredients a prescriber wants in a single preparation. That’s exactly what compounding is designed to address, and it’s what MediVera has been doing for over 25 years.

Understanding the Difference
What Women's Health Compounding Actually Means
Women’s health compounding is the process of preparing a medication to a specific strength, dosage form, or combination of active ingredients as ordered by a licensed prescriber for an individual patient. Commercial products are manufactured in fixed doses and limited delivery forms. Compounding allows a prescriber to request a preparation that fits what a specific patient needs, such as a different concentration of estradiol cream, a vaginal suppository instead of a tablet, or a combination of hormones in a single topical application.
MediVera operates as a 503A compounding pharmacy. Compounding is appropriate when a commercially available product is unavailable, unsuitable for a patient due to a documented clinical need, or when a prescriber determines customization is warranted for that patient’s care. It is not a pathway around FDA-approved therapies. Every compounded medication MediVera prepares is dispensed only on a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
MediVera is a PCAB-accredited 503A compounding pharmacy, an accreditation held by fewer than 1% of pharmacies in the United States.
Under Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, a licensed pharmacist or physician may compound a drug product for an identified individual patient based on a valid prescription from a licensed practitioner.
- Dose customization. Access a specific strength not available commercially.
- Dosage form flexibility. Topical, vaginal, oral, injectable, or blended preparations.
- Combination preparations. Multiple hormones in a single formulation.
- Ingredient considerations. Formulated without documented allergens or sensitivities.
- Availability gaps. An option a prescriber can turn to when a commercial product is unavailable.

Compounded Formulations
How Each Women's Health Compound Works
Women’s health compounding at MediVera covers a range of hormone and non-hormone preparations, each prepared based on a licensed provider’s prescription for an individual patient. The mechanism of action is attributed to the underlying active pharmaceutical ingredient, not the compounded formulation itself.
Estrogen (Estradiol)
Compounded Estradiol Cream
Topical estradiol cream prepared to the strength a provider specifies for an individual patient
Estradiol is the primary estrogen used in compounded women’s health preparations. Estrogens act by binding to estrogen receptors in estrogen-responsive tissues throughout the body. The mechanism of action is attributed to the estrogen drug class and the active pharmaceutical ingredient, not to the compounded formulation itself.
MediVera prepares compounded estradiol cream to the concentration a provider specifies, in topical and vaginal forms. Bi-est cream, which combines estriol and estradiol, is also available in standard and customizable strengths.
Compounded estradiol cream is not FDA-approved. Providers are responsible for determining whether this formulation is clinically appropriate for their patient.
Progestogen (Progesterone)
Compounded Progesterone
Topical, oral, and vaginal progesterone prepared to the dose a provider specifies
Progesterone is a progestogen prepared in multiple forms for women’s health protocols. Progestogens act by binding to progesterone receptors in target tissues. The mechanism of action is attributed to the progesterone drug class and the active pharmaceutical ingredient, not to the compounded formulation itself.
MediVera compounds progesterone as topical cream, oral capsules, and vaginal suppositories, and as a component of blended hormone preparations, each prepared to the dose specified in the prescriber’s order.
Additional compounded women’s health formulations are listed above. Download the product catalog or contact us directly to discuss clinical fit.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Women's Health Compounding
Women’s health compounding is the preparation of customized medications by a licensed compounding pharmacy based on a prescriber’s order for an individual patient. Common applications include compounded estradiol cream, compounded progesterone in various dosage forms, vaginal estrogen preparations, and other hormone or non-hormone compounds for gynecological needs. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved products. They are prepared when a commercial product is unavailable or unsuitable for a patient’s individual needs as determined by a licensed prescriber. To learn more about MediVera’s standards, visit our quality and compliance page.
Yes. Every compounded medication dispensed by MediVera, including compounded estradiol cream, compounded progesterone, vaginal suppositories, and all other women’s health compounds, requires a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. Patients cannot obtain compounded medications at MediVera without a current prescription. Providers are solely responsible for determining whether a compounded medication is clinically appropriate for each individual patient. Patients who do not yet have a prescription can request a prescription form to bring to their provider.
No. Compounded hormone therapies, including compounded estradiol, estriol, progesterone, and testosterone preparations, are not FDA-approved. Compounded medications are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. They are prepared based on a valid prescription for individual patient use under 503A compounding pharmacy regulations. MediVera operates as a PCAB-accredited 503A pharmacy, meaning our practices meet voluntary national quality standards for sterile and non-sterile compounding. Visit our quality and compliance page for details.
MediVera prepares compounded women’s health medications in multiple dosage forms as prescribed. Available forms include topical creams, vaginal creams, oral capsules, vaginal suppositories, vaginal tablets, injectable preparations (such as estradiol cypionate), and blended combination formulations. The appropriate dosage form is determined by the prescribing provider based on the patient’s clinical needs. If a provider is unsure which form best fits a patient, our pharmacy team is available to answer clinical formulation questions at 877-531-1147.
Yes. One of the primary reasons providers order compounded medications is to access a specific strength not available in a commercial product. MediVera prepares compounded estradiol cream, progesterone cream, and other hormone preparations in both standard concentrations and fully customized doses as specified in the prescriber’s order. All listed doses on this page represent common formulations. Customized strengths are available based on the prescribing provider’s clinical judgment for the individual patient.
Vaginal estrogen refers to estrogen-containing preparations applied directly to vaginal tissue, most commonly to address symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, dryness, or discomfort associated with declining estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause. Compounded vaginal estrogen preparations such as estradiol vaginal cream or estriol vaginal cream may be prescribed when commercially available concentrations or delivery forms don’t meet a patient’s individual needs. These are prescription-only compounded medications, not FDA-approved products. Patients should discuss whether vaginal estrogen is appropriate for their situation with their healthcare provider.
Providers have four options for submitting prescriptions for women’s health compounds to MediVera. They can use our Provider Portal for online submission, send through their EMR system, fax using our fax request form, or call our pharmacy team directly at 877-531-1147. After a prescription is received, our team contacts the patient within one business day and most compounds ship within 48 hours of patient confirmation. Providers who prescribe frequently can request a dedicated account representative through the provider portal.
PCAB (Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board) is a voluntary national accreditation program administered through the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). It sets quality and safety standards for compounding pharmacies that go beyond basic state licensing. PCAB accreditation requires pharmacies to meet standards for sterility testing, quality control, facility design, personnel training, and documentation. MediVera holds PCAB accreditation for both sterile and non-sterile compounding. The American Medical Association recommends that physicians use PCAB-accredited pharmacies when prescribing compounded medications. Learn more on our quality and compliance page.
