Compounding is a pharmacy practice where our pharmacists mix ingredients from scratch to build a medication around one patient’s specific needs.   • Dyes, preservatives, and lactose are found in a lot of medications. We can remove those ingredients for patients who are sensitive to them.

Two categories cover most of what compounding pharmacists make. Anything going into a vein, tissue, or the eye is sterile and requires a controlled environment to prepare. Capsules, creams, and ointments are non-sterile and carry less risk. Here is what falls under each.

  • Topical creams, oral capsules, troches, suppositories, and injectables are all forms we prepare based on what that patient can actually use.

  • Got a dog, cat, or horse that won’t take a pill? Flavored suspensions sized for that animal are one of the more common things we make.
  • Dye-free, preservative-free, allergen-free, lactose-free – patients with sensitivities get a formulation built without whatever they react to.

Standard pharmacies fill what manufacturers produce. When that does not fit a patient, we build what does. A prescription that only comes in a form or strength that does not work for someone’s body is not the end of the road.

  • We made a 8mg dose last week for a child whose prescription only came in 10mg. Standard pills do not cover every patient.
  • Liquid, dissolving tablet, cream – when swallowing a capsule is not an option, the form of the medication changes. The medication itself does not.
